College Summer Storage in Texas and Oklahoma: A Guide for TCU, UTA, OU, UCO, and WT Students

If you live off campus near TCU, UTA, OU, UCO, or West Texas A&M, a shared portable container can be the simplest summer storage: load it at your apartment or rental house, keep it at a secure MODS yard over the summer, and have it delivered back in August. Students in residence halls should follow their campus’s approved storage options.

Can I Use a Portable Container at a Residence Hall?

Usually not. Most universities control who can access residence halls and which storage companies can operate on campus. TCU Housing, for example, lists specific contracted storage vendors and states that no other companies are allowed in its residence halls. See TCU’s local storage resources.

If you live in a residence hall, use your campus’s approved options. A MODS container is a better fit for off-campus apartments, rental houses, Greek housing where allowed, and your family’s home.

Before booking for an off-campus apartment, ask the property manager where a container can sit and for how long. Many complexes have limited parking and fire lanes that must stay clear, so a quick load-and-go plan works best: deliver, load over a day or two, and have the container moved to our yard right away.

When Does a Shared Container Beat a Storage Unit?

A container makes sense when several roommates or housemates need to store furniture and boxes at the same address. Instead of renting a truck and driving to a storage facility, everyone loads at home.

What Size Container Do Students Need?

How Do Roommates Share One Container Fairly?

  • Pick one person to book the container and be the contact with MODS.
  • Agree on space: divide the container into zones by roommate.
  • Label everything with names and room colors.
  • Share one lock and give every roommate a key, or use a combination lock.
  • Photograph each zone after loading so everyone knows where their things are.
  • Agree on the August plan: who meets the delivery and where each person’s items go.

How Should Students Pack for Summer Storage?

Pack light, pack dry, and label everything, because you will not see your things for three months. A little care at move-out saves a lot of frustration in August.

  • Start early: pack non-essentials two weeks before finals so move-out week is only about the big items.
  • Use sturdy, same-size boxes or plastic bins so stacks stay stable.
  • Disassemble furniture such as bed frames, desks, and shelves, and tape hardware in labeled bags to each piece.
  • Wrap mattresses and futons in mattress bags to keep them clean.
  • Load heavy items first against the front wall, then boxes floor to ceiling.
  • Fill gaps with pillows and bagged bedding so nothing shifts.
  • Keep a small go-bag with chargers, IDs, and a few outfits for the summer.

Off-Campus Housing Checklist

  • Confirm your lease end date and any landlord rules on containers in parking lots or driveways.
  • Check city limits: Fort Worth, for example, limits residential containers to 30 days, so plan loading and pickup quickly.
  • Take move-out photos of your unit for your deposit.
  • Clean and defrost mini fridges at least a day before loading.

What About Graduating Seniors?

Load before graduation, store it at a MODS yard while you finalize your lease, and have it delivered when you get your keys. Moves between the DFW, Oklahoma City, and Amarillo areas stay inside one company. See moving containers in Fort Worth and moving containers in Oklahoma City.

What Should Students Not Store Over a Texas or Oklahoma Summer?

Containers get hot in summer sun, so keep heat-sensitive items with you.

  • Laptops, tablets, and gaming systems
  • Vinyl records, photos, and important papers
  • Candles, cosmetics, and medications
  • Food and drinks, including anything in a mini fridge
  • Aerosols and cleaning chemicals

Clean and dry mini fridges before storing and leave the door propped open to prevent odor. Read are portable storage containers climate controlled.

What About Parents Helping With the Move?

Parents often prefer a container because it avoids a long drive with a loaded trailer. Load at the student’s off-campus address, then have MODS deliver it to the family home or store it at a yard. For moves between campuses and home cities in our network, such as Fort Worth, Oklahoma City, and Amarillo, one company handles both ends.

See our route guides: Fort Worth and Oklahoma City and Fort Worth to Amarillo.

It also means parents do not have to take time off work for a long drive during finals week.
